Togo: Under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, a diplomatic transformation toward a proactive and modern approach

Under the visionary leadership of President of the Council Faure Gnassingbé, Togo continues to transform its diplomacy through a proactive and modern approach. This momentum is further strengthened by the recent adoption of a public policy and action plan tailored to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and Togolese Abroad. This strategic framework was validated during a conclave held in Kpalimé, with support from international partners such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and German Cooperation (GIZ). The new tool aims to enhance the effectiveness, visibility, and coherence of Togo’s diplomatic actions, ensuring better coordination among the various entities involved in the country’s foreign policy.

This action plan goes beyond organizing diplomatic efforts; it clarifies and aligns them with clearly defined priorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will thus be better equipped to address contemporary challenges—political, economic, security-related, or cultural. By providing a formal strategic framework for diplomatic work, this initiative allows Togo to tackle global issues while strengthening its influence and position on the international stage. It represents a decisive step forward in the modernization process launched in 2023 to elevate the country’s diplomatic profile.

One of the key priorities of this new diplomatic orientation is the empowerment of the Togolese diaspora. Togo acknowledges the strategic importance of its diaspora—not only as a driver of economic and social development but also as a key player in promoting Togolese culture and values worldwide. The plan encourages active engagement of Togolese abroad in the country’s development and in enhancing its international image. To this end, the government seeks to establish ongoing dialogue with its nationals abroad to reinforce ties between the diaspora and the homeland.

Lastly, this new policy of active diplomacy also places strong emphasis on regional cooperation—an essential component of Togo’s external strategy. Through the consolidation of regional and continental partnerships, particularly within ECOWAS and the African Union, Togo aims to play a leading role in resolving regional crises while leveraging its strengths to attract foreign investment. This strategic orientation fully aligns with President Faure Gnassingbé’s vision of positioning Togo as a key player in Africa’s development. This modern, inclusive, and forward-looking diplomacy is expected to elevate Togo’s status on the world stage.
