On Friday 22 December 2023, the Togolese Minister of Sport and Leisure, Dr Lidi Bessi-Kama, officially launched the 2023-2024 school and university championship season at the Anani Chardey stadium in Aného. This year’s theme is «A healthy environment for healthy sports».
In his opening speech, Minister Lidi Bessi-Kama stressed that the government considers sport in schools and universities to be one of the major pillars of its efforts to promote the emergence of a genuine sporting elite in the country.
For the Togolese Minister of Sport and Leisure, the success of previous editions of the school and university championships bears witness to the fact that the government is well on the way to winning its bold gamble.
Dr Lidi Bessi-Kama encouraged pupils and students to make full use of this tool, designed especially for them, to showcase their talents.
Referring to the theme of the 2023-2024 season, the Minister emphasised that these championships will serve as a means of raising awareness among pupils and students of the urgent need to take action in the face of climate change.
The aim is to reverse the trend by adopting a lifestyle that is in harmony with the environment.
In the previous edition of the school and university championships in 2022-2023, the University of Lomé beat its counterpart in Kara by 1 goal to 0.
This year’s programme includes a number of sports such as handball, swimming, judo, athletics and, in particular, football.
