Marseille impresses despite 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid

Last night, Olympique de Marseille delivered a strong performance against Real Madrid, despite losing 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu. Roberto De Zerbi’s men managed to challenge the Spanish giants at several moments, leaving a positive impression even in defeat.
In the first half, Real Madrid dominated and created the best chances. However, after the break, fatigue seemed to affect the Spaniards, giving Marseille more space to show ambition. Former Madrid player Guti admitted that “it was a difficult match” for the Merengues, while the Spanish press praised Marseille’s bold and open style of play.
AS highlighted the quality of Marseille’s pressing and their desire to reclaim a strong European status. Greenwood, Weah, and especially Aubameyang, who came close to leveling the score, confirmed the attacking potential of the team. Mundo Deportivo underlined Marseille’s determination, noting they never looked like mere tourists in Madrid.
In the end, Mbappé secured the win for Real with two converted penalties. A frustrating result for Marseille, but one filled with valuable lessons. De Zerbi and his players must now quickly turn their focus to another major challenge ahead: the “Classique” against Paris Saint-Germain at the Orange Vélodrome.
