Chad: Four officers killed in ambush in Borkou, governor suspended

A deadly assault struck the Chadian army in the northern Borkou province, claiming the lives of four officers including the commanders of the Gendarmerie legion and the National and Nomadic Guard of Chad (GNNT), security sources reported Wednesday.

The incident unfolded overnight Tuesday into Wednesday on the road linking Faya to Kouba Oulanga.

Armed individuals ambushed and killed a travel agency driver. In the morning, relatives of the victim confronted the assailants, sparking violent clashes. Army units based in Faya-Largeau, the provincial capital, subsequently intervened.

The fighting proved exceptionally intense. Preliminary reports indicate four officers fell, including the two senior commanders. Three attackers were neutralized and another captured.

In the aftermath, Borkou provincial governor General Djimta Ben Dergon was suspended by authorities.

Territorial Administration Minister Limane Mahamat formally cited “refusal to take responsibility” and “flight,” according to administrative sources; a decisive response signalling zero tolerance for security failures.

The attack underscores persistent insecurity in the difficult-to-control northern regions of Chad where highway bandits and criminal groups continue operating.

It also raises questions about security arrangements and local officials’ responsiveness to threats.

As the army mourns its four officers, investigations continue to uncover circumstances surrounding the tragedy and track any remaining accomplices.

The suspension of the governor sends a strong message: rigor and commitment must remain exemplary at all levels.
