IGAD hosts Special Envoys Forum in Nairobi to strengthen Sudan peace efforts

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) convened the 3rd Special Envoys and Representatives Forum in Nairobi, jointly hosted by IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Dr. Musalia Mudavadi.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Workneh emphasized that Sudan’s ongoing conflict continues to generate far-reaching consequences for both the country and the wider region.

He stressed the urgent need for stronger coordination among regional and international peace actors, calling for a shared strategic assessment, greater complementarity, and a clear division of responsibilities among all partners.

The forum brought together key stakeholders including the African Union, the United Nations, the League of Arab States, the European Union, the Quartet, the Quintet, and other influential partners.

Participants collectively reaffirmed a core principle: Sudan’s path to peace must remain Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led. International and regional actors must instead provide coordinated support toward achieving lasting stability.

This gathering represents a renewed commitment to harmonizing efforts and ensuring that peace initiatives in Sudan align with the will and aspirations of its people.
