Algeria and Angola Share honors in AFCON opener: A tale of resilience and stalemate

In the opening clash of their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) journey, Algeria encountered a resilient Angola, culminating in a 1-1 draw that saw both teams grapple for dominance. The Fennecs, considered strong contenders, faced a formidable challenge from the Black Antelopes.

The match unfolded at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, where Algeria, under the guidance of coach Djamel Belmadi, swiftly seized control of possession.

Pedro Goncalves’ Angola found themselves on the defensive, contending with the relentless attacks orchestrated by Riyad Mahrez and his teammates.

The breakthrough for Algeria came in the 18th minute when Baghdad Bounedjah, skillfully set up by Youcef Belaïli behind the Angolan defense, executed a precise right-footed volley that found the back of the net.

The Fennecs managed to maintain their lead convincingly until the halftime whistle.

The second half witnessed a shift in momentum, with the Black Antelopes displaying more prominence than in the initial period.

The pace dwindled on the Algerian side, ultimately falling into the tactical trap set by Angola.

The Algerian defense conceded a penalty just after the hour mark, flawlessly converted by Mabululu, leveling the score at 1-1 (68′).

Despite Algeria’s persistent efforts to reclaim the lead, the resolute Angolan defense thwarted every attempt until the final whistle.

The 1-1 draw mirrored Algeria’s performance in the previous AFCON, signaling a need for improvement.

Meanwhile, Angola’s commendable performance against the top contender in Group D marks a promising start to their AFCON campaign.
