Andre Onana’s turbulent AFCON 2023 Journey: From Criticism to Possible International retirement

Following an eventful stint with the Cameroonian national team in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, goalkeeper André Onana has broken his silence on social media. His turbulent journey included a delayed arrival, subpar performances, sharp criticisms, and an early exit. After returning to his club, Onana took to social platforms to address the challenges he faced.

In a cryptic message shared on his Snapchat account, Onana stated, «One can manipulate some of the people all the time, and all the people some of the time, but never will one manipulate all the people all the time».

This enigmatic statement sheds light on his perspective and emotions regarding the recent events.

Arriving in Ivory Coast after the tournament had already commenced, Onana missed Cameroon’s initial match against Guinea.

Despite being named in the starting lineup for the second game against Senegal by coach Rigobert Song, the Manchester United goalkeeper conceded three goals, prompting severe criticism for what was perceived as a lack of engagement in the goal.

Subsequently, he found himself benched for the following two Cameroon matches and only returned to the pitch during the team’s final moments before being eliminated from the competition.

While Onana continued to support his teammates from the sidelines, his recent social media post hints at lingering resentment.

Additionally, reports from the Daily Mail suggest that André Onana is contemplating international retirement after a challenging AFCON 2023 campaign with the Indomitable Lions.

The situation is one that will undoubtedly be closely monitored in the coming days.
