DR Congo secures semifinal Berth with convincing 3-1 Victory over Guinea in AFCON 2023 Quarter-Final Clash

In the quarter-final clash between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) and Guinea at Allassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpe, DR Congo secured a 3-1 victory, advancing to the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The match witnessed a tense first half marked by missed opportunities, but the turning point came when Chancel Mbemba committed a foul on Mohamed Bayo in the penalty area.

The Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal promptly awarded a penalty, which Bayo expertly converted with a well-placed shot, giving Guinea a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.

However, DR Congo responded swiftly, capitalizing on a corner from the right side.

Chancel Mbemba, who was culpable for the earlier penalty, redeemed himself by scoring with a striker’s instinct at the second post, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 27th minute.

The first half concluded with both teams adopting a cautious approach, heading into the break with a 1-1 scoreline.

In the second half, DR Congo maintained their offensive momentum. Silas Wamangituka, who entered the game as a substitute for Meschack Elia, showcased his speed in the right wing, drawing a foul in the penalty area.

Yohan Wissa stepped up and calmly converted the penalty with a precise right-footed shot, giving DR Congo a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute.

Despite Guinea making offensive substitutions, including Serhou Guirassy, they couldn’t find the equalizer.

On the contrary, DR Congo extended their lead. Arthur Masuaku surprised everyone, including Guinea’s goalkeeper Koné, by opting for a direct shot to the first post during a free-kick in the 82nd minute, catching Koné off guard and securing the third goal.

With a 3-1 advantage, DR Congo effectively managed the game until the final whistle. The victory propels DR Congo to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the match between Côte d’Ivoire and Mali. This marks DR Congo’s first appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals since 2015.
