Joel Embiid spoke about the mental challenges he faced during his two-month injury absence as he made a triumphant return to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 109-105 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA.
Embiid, aged 30, had suffered a knee injury during a 119-107 loss to the Golden State Warriors on January 31.
In his comeback game at Wells Fargo Center, he put up an impressive performance with 24 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
«The mental toll of this injury was significant. I was determined to come back»,” Embiid revealed.
«I know there’s room for improvement, but mentally, this has been the toughest period for me».
The 76ers struggled in Embiid’s absence, losing 18 out of 30 games. They currently hold the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference, now in the play-in positions after previously securing automatic post-season qualification.
In other NBA action, Nikola Jokic’s stellar performance of 42 points, along with six assists and 16 rebounds, propelled the Denver Nuggets to a 110-105 win over the San Antonio Spurs.
This victory saw the Nuggets climb to the top of the Western Conference standings, displacing the Oklahoma City Thunder, who dropped to second place after their second loss in four games.
The Dallas Mavericks’ seven-game winning streak came to an end with a narrow 104-100 defeat against the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco.
Andrew Wiggins led the Warriors with 23 points, contributing to their fifth consecutive victory.
The Los Angeles Lakers secured a convincing 128-111 win against the Toronto Raptors, extending the Canadian team’s losing streak to 14 games.
D’Angelo Russell was instrumental for the Lakers with 25 points and seven assists, while LeBron James added 23 points to the winning effort.
Domantas Sabonis continued his impressive streak of consecutive double-doubles in post-merger NBA history, achieving this feat in 58 successive games. He scored 22 points and grabbed 20 rebounds as the Sacramento Kings defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 109-95.
