Atletico Madrid takes Commanding lead over Dortmund in Champions League clash

The highly anticipated clash between Atlético Madrid and Borussia Dortmund lived up to its billing, with Atletico putting on a dominant display at home and securing a strong advantage for qualification ahead of the return leg! The Metropolitano Stadium was packed for this first leg quarter-final showdown of the Champions League.

Atlético Madrid hosted Borussia Dortmund, two teams with contrasting journeys in this prestigious tournament, now meeting at this critical stage for a shot at the semi-finals.

The Spanish club, having eliminated the reigning vice-champions Inter Milan, came into the match with momentum on their side.

Diego Simeone’s men had shown resilience to earn their place in the quarters, notably thanks to heroic performances by goalkeeper Oblak in their victory over Inter.

On the other hand, Edin Terzic’s Dortmund had a stellar campaign, topping a challenging group that included Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, and Newcastle United.

This impressive run bolstered their confidence for the knockout rounds. However, facing Atlético Madrid, who started the game with intensity, Dortmund found themselves trailing early.

Rodrygo De Paul opened the scoring in the 4th minute, setting the tone for an exciting start to the match.

Samuel Lino added a second goal for Atlético in the 32nd minute, giving them a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Atletico Madrid defended their lead resolutely, although Dortmund managed to create some chances to claw back into the game.

It was Sébastien Haller who gave Dortmund a glimmer of hope with a goal in the 80th minute, making it 2-1.

This sparked a frenetic end to the match, but Atletico held on to secure a crucial victory before the return leg.

The 2-1 win gives Atlético Madrid a significant advantage as they look to book their spot in the Champions League semi-finals.
