Burkina Faso: President Ibrahim Traoré pursues his vision of food self-sufficiency by stocking the Samandéni dam

President Ibrahim Traoré’s dedication to achieving food self-sufficiency is evident in the recent fish stocking operation overseen by the Ministry of Fisheries. Launched on April 12, 2024, this initiative marked a milestone with the installation of six floating cages at the Samandéni dam, signaling a substantial leap toward realizing this critical objective for national welfare.

This strategic endeavor targets an increase in marketable fish production, a vital component of the country’s food security strategy.

The floating cages act as nurseries where fingerlings are nurtured until they reach maturity.

Impressive statistics from the ministry reveal the scale of this undertaking: each cage is projected to yield 9 tons of marketable fish per cycle, translating into a substantial income of 18 million CFA francs in just four months.

Furthermore, the potential for up to three cycles annually presents significant economic opportunities for operators.

The Samandéni dam boasts immense production potential, capable of accommodating up to 500 operators.

With optimal utilization, this natural resource has the capacity to supply as much as 70 thousand tons of fish annually, effectively meeting the rising demand for animal protein across the populace.

The Director-General of Fisheries underscores the ready availability of fingerlings, a crucial factor in ensuring the sustainability and success of this initiative.

This assurance of fingerling supply further bolsters the feasibility of the project, offering a promising outlook for long-term food security.

The fish stocking operation at Samandéni epitomizes President Ibrahim Traoré’s commitment to fostering sustainable food production.

This strategic move reflects the government’s unwavering dedication to enhancing the welfare and prosperity of citizens while laying a solid foundation for enduring food security.
