Togo/Human Rights: The new Members of the CNDH vow to carry out their mission faithfully

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Togo, tasked with safeguarding human rights and defending their advocates, has recently welcomed new members into its fold. These individuals took their solemn oath on Wednesday, April 17, before the National Assembly, as mandated by the country’s laws.

A total of nine (09) members, hailing from diverse backgrounds such as law and justice, humanities, health, human rights advocacy, and environmental protection, pledged to fulfill their mission with integrity and independence.

Elected by the National Assembly deputies on March 15, these NHRC members were subsequently appointed through a presidential decree upon the recommendation of the minister overseeing relations with the Republic’s institutions, in adherence to constitutional and organic law guidelines governing the NHRC’s composition, organization, and operations.

Their responsibilities were reaffirmed by the President of the National Assembly, Yawa Djigbodi Tsègan, who emphasized the importance of their roles in upholding fairness and accountability.

Established in 1987, the NHRC’s primary objective is to promote and safeguard human rights in Togo, protect human rights advocates, and prevent instances of torture or other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment in places of detention or identified locations.
