Niger: End of illegal US military presence in Niamey, soldiers have until 15 September to leave the country

Following the departure of French troops, American soldiers are also set to leave Niamey as demanded by Nigerien authorities, who are determined to break free from imperialist influence and establish equitable strategic partnerships that respect their national sovereignty.

In accordance with Niamey’s decision, American forces have been given until September 15 to pack up and vacate the Agadez airbase (in northern Niger), which was set up as part of counterterrorism efforts.

This withdrawal agreement was reached between the Nigerien Ministry of Defense and the United States.

By mid-September, the 1,100 American soldiers stationed in Niger will be leaving, marking the end of a U.S. military presence that was imposed during Bazoum’s administration and deemed unconstitutional and undemocratic by the current authorities.

Nigerien leaders have successfully terminated this unfair defense agreement, which failed to effectively combat terrorism despite the advanced and high-performance equipment installed by the Americans at the Agadez base.

This denunciation of the agreement by Niamey underscores its commitment to prioritizing the aspirations and interests of the Nigerien people, a sovereign principle that contributes to the rebuilding and preservation of the Nigerien nation.
