Meta advocates for legislation requiring parental approval for teen app downloads

Meta has proposed legislation that would require app stores, such as Apple and Google, to obtain parental approval when a child downloads an app.

The proposal suggests placing responsibility on app stores to implement parental controls rather than on social media companies.

Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, has faced criticism for its handling of teens on its platforms and is now calling for an «industry-wide solution» for governing children’s social media use.

The company’s safety chief expressed support for federal legislation requiring app stores to notify parents and obtain approval when teens under 16 download apps.

The move comes amid increasing regulatory scrutiny and lawsuits related to child and teen use of social media platforms.
