Burkina Faso: The creation of a national AES commission demonstrates Faso’s determination to consolidate tripartite links

On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, Burkina Faso’s transitional government officially established a National Commission for the Confederation of the Sahel States Alliance (AES). This national body is designed to provide crucial support to President Ibrahim Traoré, one of the founding members of the AES, as he navigates the complex process of structuring and operationalizing the Confederation.

The formation of this technically-focused commission highlights the steadfast commitment of Burkina Faso’s leadership to strengthen the common organization.

The AES aims to address the pressing challenges within the Liptako Gourma region, particularly in defense, security, economic and social development, and diplomacy.

Since the formalization of the Confederation by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the involved parties have consistently demonstrated their strong willingness to collaborate on these critical issues.

Under the direct supervision of President Ibrahim Traoré, the newly formed commission in Burkina Faso will play a pivotal role in coordinating and overseeing AES activities.

Specifically, its primary responsibilities include monitoring the implementation of decisions made by the College of Heads of State, organizing confederal sessions of the Council of Ministers, and preparing for meetings of the College of Heads of State, as well as preparatory meetings of senior officials for AES institutions.

Furthermore, the commission is tasked with conducting forward-looking analyses on the future development of the AES, proposing actions and measures to reinforce the Confederation, and promoting awareness among the population about AES objectives.

The creation of this body marks a significant step in Burkina Faso’s ongoing efforts to consolidate and advance the goals of the Confederation of the Sahel States.
