Burkina Faso: UNHCR commends Humanitarian action of Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s government

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commended the humanitarian efforts of Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s government in Burkina Faso. A delegation from the UNHCR, led by Assistant High Commissioner for Operations Raouf Mazou, met with a Burkinabé government delegation on November 20, 2023.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the complex humanitarian challenges facing Burkina Faso, focusing on the commendable management of two million internally displaced persons and the welcoming of over 38 thousand refugees on its territory.

Mr. Mazou, heading the UNHCR delegation, expressed deep appreciation for Burkina Faso’s commendable humanitarian initiatives.

He highlighted the effective care for internally displaced persons while providing essential refuge for a significant number of refugees.

The session brought to light diverse actions undertaken by the Burkinabé government, led by President Ibrahim Traoré, to ensure the security and well-being of these vulnerable populations.

In the spirit of mutual commitment, the UNHCR expressed its willingness to work closely with Burkinabé authorities, recognizing the importance of aligning with national priorities to ensure targeted and effective humanitarian assistance.

Beyond the humanitarian emergency, the UNHCR envisions expanding towards development initiatives in collaboration with the World Bank to address the root causes of massive population displacement.

This collaboration between the UNHCR, the World Bank, and the Burkinabe government reflects a collective response to humanitarian challenges, demonstrating a strong commitment to the protection and well-being of displaced and refugee populations in Burkina Faso.
