Burkina Faso/Counter-terrorism: Minister Mahamadou SANA outlines new guidelines

In response to a network of wrongdoers, including certain Burkinabe individuals with a vested interest in perpetuating terrorism and obstructing the country’s quest for sovereignty and freedom, the authorities have intensified their efforts.

These crucial measures aim to strengthen the fight against terrorism and enhance the security of both urban and rural areas across Burkina Faso.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Burkinabe Minister of Security, Police Commissioner Mahamadou SANA, held discussions with the leadership of both the National Police and the National Gendarmerie.

The focus of these meetings was the significant reforms introduced by the government to boost the effectiveness and efficiency of the country’s security institutions in countering terrorist threats.

Among the key reforms is the evaluation of the command chain based on the specific missions and objectives assigned to each actor.

Additionally, a new decree that will delineate areas of jurisdiction between the National Police and the National Gendarmerie is set to come into effect in January 2025.

Another focal point is the activation of the national anti-terrorism strategy, particularly the “triangle of connection” between the Defense and Security Forces, the general population, and the government.

Minister Mahamadou SANA also highlighted the importance of fostering a more localized approach to leadership, while stressing the need to establish a robust support system for injured officers and the families of those who have fallen in service.

This initiative aims to strengthen social bonds, all in the best interest of the nation.

The security leadership was commended for their unwavering commitment and efforts to safeguard the country and combat the scourge of terrorism. They were encouraged to continue their hard work in pursuit of the ultimate goal: freeing Burkina Faso from the grip of its adversaries.
