Israel/Netanyahu’s gambit: Defence Minister’s Firing sparks new crisis in the country

In a dramatic move that has plunged Israel into fresh political turmoil, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, citing a “crisis of trust.” The decision comes at a critical juncture in Israel’s war in Gaza and has triggered widespread protests across the country.

The dismissal highlights three key points of contention: Gallant’s support for “painful concessions” to secure remaining hostages from Gaza, his advocacy for mandatory military service for Ultra-Orthodox citizens, and his call for a national inquiry into the October 7 attacks.

Particularly contentious was Gallant’s stance on hostage negotiations. He publicly stated that Israel could “bear” the concessions necessary to bring home the remaining captives – a position that apparently clashed with Netanyahu’s harder line approach.

The timing of the dismissal, coinciding with the U.S. presidential election, has raised eyebrows among observers, given Gallant’s strong relationship with the White House compared to Netanyahu’s more strained ties. Foreign Minister Israel Katz will replace Gallant, with the change taking effect in 48 hours.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum has condemned the move, viewing it as an attempt to “torpedo” a potential hostage release deal. With approximately 100 hostages still in captivity after more than a year, this leadership shake-up has sparked fears about the prospects for their return.

This isn’t the first time Netanyahu has attempted to remove Gallant – a similar effort in March 2023 was reversed following massive public protests, in what became known as “Gallant Night.”
