Europa League: Osimhen shines with a brace as Galatasaray hands Spurs first loss in the competition
Victor Osimhen delivered a decisive performance in Istanbul, scoring twice as Galatasaray defeated Tottenham 3-2, handing the Premier League side their first Europa League loss of the season.
The Nigerian forward exploited Tottenham’s defensive lapses, underscoring his clinical edge and propelling the Turkish champions to the top of Group A.
Tottenham struggled with Galatasaray’s pressure from the outset. Yunus Akgun opened the scoring with a stunning volley from 20 yards, setting the tone for a night of defensive disarray for Spurs.
Although 19-year-old Will Lankshear managed to equalize in his second senior appearance, he later received two yellow cards, reducing Tottenham to ten men and leaving them vulnerable.
Osimhen capitalized on the visitors’ errors, slotting in his first after a misplaced clearance, assisted by Dries Mertens. He followed with a composed finish from another Mertens delivery, exploiting space in the box to double Galatasaray’s lead.
While substitute Dominic Solanke scored late to lessen the deficit, Tottenham’s defensive frailties and struggles to retain possession were evident throughout. Despite several critical saves from Fraser Forster, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou will face scrutiny over his lineup choices.
With this victory, Galatasaray leapfrogs Tottenham in the standings, emphasizing Osimhen’s role as a game-changer on a challenging European night for Spurs.
