WHO Africa loses Regional Director-Elect Dr. Faustine Ndugulile

Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the newly elected WHO Regional Director for Africa, has passed away while undergoing medical treatment in India. His untimely demise has left a void in global and African health leadership.

Dr. Ndugulile, a former Tanzanian Health Minister, was chosen in August 2024 to succeed Dr. Matshidiso Moeti as Regional Director of WHO Africa. His term was scheduled to begin in February 2025, marking a new chapter for the organization following Dr. Moeti’s ten years of service.

During his career, Dr. Ndugulile was recognized for his unwavering dedication to strengthening healthcare systems and addressing critical health challenges. He committed to tackling issues such as the resurgence of measles and improving health services across the continent.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan shared her grief on X (formerly Twitter), describing Dr. Ndugulile’s passing as a significant loss for Tanzania and Africa.

“It is with profound sorrow that I acknowledge the passing of Honourable Dr. Faustine Ndugulile. His contributions to Kigamboni and the nation were immeasurable,” she wrote.

Dr. Ndugulile’s vision for transforming healthcare in Africa will remain a cornerstone of his legacy, even as the WHO now faces the challenge of selecting another leader to carry forward his ambitious goals for the region.
