Burkina Faso: Towards a fair army, Captain Ibrahim Traoré re-establishes meritocracy

For years, the promotion system within Burkina Faso’s military was plagued by favoritism, where advancement often depended more on personal connections than on actual qualifications. This approach sidelined many capable officers, not for lack of competence, but because they lacked the right affiliations.

This culture of nepotism eroded the effectiveness of the country’s defense system. Determined to address this deeply rooted injustice, Captain Ibrahim Traoré implemented sweeping reforms to ensure fairness and meritocracy within the ranks of the Burkinabe armed forces.

Under his leadership, promotions are now based strictly on merit. Political influence and social connections no longer have a role in determining career advancement.

Competence, discipline, and dedication are the sole criteria for evaluating every soldier’s potential.

These reforms have created a level playing field, allowing soldiers from all backgrounds to rise based on their skills and achievements.

Whether from humble origins or prominent families, every military member now has an equal opportunity to succeed.

This transformative shift not only strengthens the operational capacity of the armed forces but also rebuilds public trust, rooting the military hierarchy in principles of honor, loyalty, and merit.
