Togo: Significant progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS with notable decreases in New infections and deaths

During the period from 2010 to 2022, Togo has witnessed a substantial reduction in new HIV infections, plummeting by 65%. Similarly, deaths related to the virus have decreased by 64%. These findings were made public by the National Council for the Fight Against AIDS in Togo on the occasion of World AIDS Day this Friday, December 1.

This event provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in the fight against this disease and present the figures from the latest report on HIV response activities, published last June.

In 2022, no less than 57,000 people were tested, and 18 million condoms were distributed.

The country has approximately 110,000 people living with HIV, with over 60% being female.

Regarding antiretroviral treatments, 86,679 people living with HIV have been supported, and 75% of patients under treatment have had the opportunity to test their viral load, of which 90% have achieved viral load suppression.

Togo also commends the effective management of tuberculosis-HIV co-infection through appropriate treatments.

Overall, the death rate related to the viral disease has remained stable over the past five years, standing at around 15%.
