Resolution achieved: African Development Bank resumes operations in Ethiopia after diplomatic incident

Following the diplomatic incident involving the severe assault on two international staff members of the African Development Bank (AfDB) by Ethiopian security forces, the AfDB leaders made an immediate decision: to withdraw its international staff from Ethiopia.

The concerning situation, requiring swift resolution, prompted AfDB President, Mr. Akinwumi Adesina, to travel to Addis Ababa for discussions with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. These talks proved fruitful, leading to a resolution of the crisis.

As a result of these discussions, the AfDB officially announced the resumption of its activities in Ethiopia.

Sources indicate that the Bank received formal apologies from Ethiopian authorities, acting on behalf of the Ethiopian government, coupled with firm assurances regarding the security and safety of the Bank and its personnel.

The AfDB expressed satisfaction and confidence in the strong personal leadership and firm commitment demonstrated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

These qualities played a crucial role in resolving the impasse caused by the incident, and the Bank looks forward to a renewed and strengthened partnership with the Ethiopian government.

This positive outcome underscores the importance of constructive dialogue and cooperation in resolving diplomatic tensions and maintaining fruitful relations between international institutions and member countries.
