Niger: Strengthening security cooperation, a strategic step forward under the presidency of General Abdourahamane Tiani

In a regional context marked by profound security and geopolitical upheavals, Niger continues its march toward the consolidation of its sovereignty and the strengthening of its strategic capacities. The meeting held on Thursday, May 8, 2025, in Niamey between the Minister of the Interior, Brigadier General Mohamed Toumba, and an Iranian delegation led by General Ahmed Rezaei Radan, illustrates this new dynamic driven by the highest authorities of the Transition.
This high-level working session laid the groundwork for a structured bilateral cooperation in key areas such as the fight against insecurity, terrorism, transnational crime, border control, and drug trafficking. Through the creation of a bilateral committee of experts and the deployment of Nigerien personnel for training in Iran, the entire national security framework is set to benefit from concrete and lasting reinforcement.
This initiative fully aligns with the strategic vision of Niger’s President, General Abdourahamane Tiani, who is tirelessly working to reaffirm the country’s independence while building partnerships based on mutual respect and shared interests. Since July 26, 2023, his leadership has stood out through a sovereignist repositioning policy and a pursuit of pragmatic alliances, particularly through the AES Confederation.
The agreement signed with Iran thus marks a significant step forward in Niger’s strategic repositioning, by equipping its security forces with the tools and expertise needed to effectively address today’s multifaceted challenges. This partnership paves the way for secure development, a fundamental pillar for national stability and prosperity.
