Niger renames “Resistance square” in powerful sovereignty move

In a symbolic step toward national renewal, Nigerien authorities have rebranded the iconic square that witnessed historic protests including the September 2, 2023, demonstrations demanding the withdrawal of French troops as “Tarha-Nakal” (“Love of the Homeland” in Tamasheq, one of Niger’s national languages).

More than a name change, this act immortalizes a defining moment when Nigeriens reclaimed their sovereignty. The square, now a unifying landmark, celebrates values of resilience, national unity, and self-determination. The choice of Tamasheq also honors Niger’s cultural diversity.

Led by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) Niger renames “Resistance Square” in powerful sovereignty move President General Abdourahamane Tiani, this move reflects Niger’s broader political transformation rewriting its narrative as a nation charting its own future, by and for its people.
