Africa: For African sovereignty, Harouna Douamba fights against European sanctions

In Ouagadougou, a wave of commitment is sweeping across the African political and economic landscape. Harouna Douamba, an influential figure of pan-Africanism and a dedicated Ivorian-Burkinabè businessman, has just filed a complaint with the European Union Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The target of his legal action? An EU decision dated December 16, 2024, which placed him on a sanctions list for reasons he describes as baseless, defamatory, and politically motivated.

In a firm yet measured statement, Harouna Douamba denounces what he sees as a serious attack on his honor, reputation, and professional commitments. He criticizes the lack of due process, the absence of transparency, and the use of methods he calls neocolonial. “Why is every African voice of dissent automatically labeled as pro-Russian?” he asks, insisting that Africa’s sovereignty is neither for sale nor to be silenced.

This case is part of a broader context in which many African figures are stigmatized for challenging systems imposed by foreign powers. Mr. Douamba’s situation epitomizes the growing tension between a Europe seeking to maintain influence and an Africa demanding respect.

In response to what he views as an abuse of power, Harouna Douamba aims to turn his legal battle into a political and legal precedent. By taking the case to a European court, he is not only defending his name—he is asserting Africa’s fundamental right to speak freely, without distortion or censorship.

A symbolic yet crucial fight, especially as global geopolitical dynamics continue to shift.
