Football: PSG triumphs on and off the pitch

On Sunday night, PSG shone both on the pitch and on screen. Broadcast in prime time on TF1, PSG’s match against Atlético Madrid in the Club World Cup drew an average of 3.8 million viewers, according to figures released by Médiamétrie on Monday, June 16. With a 21% audience share, the game topped the evening’s TV ratings, confirming the French public’s strong interest in football and in the Parisian club.

Organized by FIFA and held in the United States, this new version of the Club World Cup has sparked significant controversy. Many critics see it as a purely commercial competition that unnecessarily overloads an already packed football calendar. Nevertheless, the event enjoys wide media coverage. In France, streaming platform DAZN holds the broadcasting rights for all matches, while TF1 secured two key games: PSG’s opening match and the final scheduled for July 13.

Despite decent numbers, Sunday’s audience remains far below the exceptional ratings recorded for the recent UEFA Champions League final. PSG’s emphatic victory over Inter Milan on May 31 attracted around 11.8 million viewers, reaching 54% audience share across M6 and Canal+.

Still, PSG continues to unite a large audience, further strengthening its global appeal. The question now is whether the upcoming Club World Cup final will generate the same level of excitement and viewership as their historic Champions League triumph.
