2026 World Cup/ South Africa’s nightmare repeat: 16 years later, another opening loss to Mexico
Sixteen years to the day after Siphiwe Tshabalala’s iconic goal united a nation at Soccer City, South Africa returned to a World Cup opener against the same opponent. This time, at the Estadio Azteca, there was no celebration.
The Bafana Bafana were dismantled 2-0 by co-hosts Mexico, producing a performance so disjointed that the match was effectively over inside nine minutes. A defensive error gifted Julián Quiñones the tournament’s first goal. Raúl Jiménez added a powerful header in the 67th minute.
Worse followed. Sphephelo Sithole was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity, and substitute Themba Zwane saw red for slapping an opponent. Mexico’s Cesar Montes also received a late red card.
Captain Ronwen Williams, who made several saves, admitted: “We wanted to reach halftime without conceding… every mistake is punished at this level.”
The English press noted South Africa were “completely petrified” and “never existed.”
With no wins in three friendlies and visa issues delaying their arrival, this return to the World Cup is one to forget. Next up: Czech Republic. No margin for error.
