Bayern Munich reclaims Bundesliga title after Leverkusen stumble

After a rare trophy-less season in 2023-24, Bayern Munich is back on top of German football, clinching their 34th Bundesliga title thanks to Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw with Freiburg on Sunday.

Last year, Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten campaign ended Bayern’s 11-year dominance, prompting a major rebuild. The Bavarians took a bold gamble by appointing Vincent Kompany, fresh from relegation with Burnley, as head coach.

The Belgian quickly silenced doubters, instilling a winning mentality and guiding Bayern to an early lead in the standings.

Despite a Champions League quarterfinal exit to Inter Milan, Bayern never faltered domestically. Key contributions came from Harry Kane (24 league goals), who finally lifted his first career trophy, and rising stars Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise. Veteran Thomas Müller added a 13th league title in his farewell season.

Kompany, who vowed to restore Bayern’s fear factor, delivered: “When you play Bayern, it should feel almost impossible. That’s our goal.”

Now, the question is whether this marks the start of another era of dominance—or if Leverkusen and others can mount a stronger challenge next season.
