Burkina Faso introduces mandatory patriotic immersion program for students

In a significant move to strengthen civic education, the Burkinabe government has approved a compulsory patriotic immersion program for students who pass their school exams. The measure, adopted during the May 2, 2025, Council of Ministers meeting, aims to instill patriotism, civic responsibility, and national commitment in youth from an early age.

Gilbert Ouédraogo, Minister of Communication, emphasized that education should go beyond academic and technical training. “We must cultivate citizens deeply devoted to their country,” he stated.

“This initiative will nurture a new generation of patriotic Burkinabe ready to defend their nation’s interests.”

The program will feature modules on Burkina Faso’s history, sociology, social cohesion, patriotism, and geopolitics, with special focus on national history—a foundational element often overlooked in schools.

Unlike military training, the courses will be held in dedicated centers or selected schools, led by qualified instructors.

This ambitious policy reflects Burkina Faso’s push to bolster national unity and civic resilience amid geopolitical challenges and internal struggles.

By fostering an informed, conscious, and united populace, the government aims to build a generation capable of driving the nation’s development.

The initiative marks a pivotal step toward a stronger, more prosperous Burkina Faso, rooted in collective pride and purpose.
