AES Nations forge unified energy strategy to boost sovereignty

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are advancing a collective vision for energy sovereignty under the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), as leaders Captain Ibrahim Traoré, General Abdourahme Tiani, and General Assimi Goïta push for integrated solutions to shared challenges.

At the inaugural AES energy regulators’ summit in Bamako, Mali’s Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga emphasized the critical need for a unified regional approach to harness natural resources—including solar, wind, uranium, and hydrocarbons—for energy security and economic growth.

Key priorities :

  • Joint infrastructure: Scaling cross-border energy exchanges and renewable integration
  • Resource optimization: Maximizing solar, hydro, and fossil fuel potential
  • Reduced dependence: Cutting technical losses and external reliance

“This unified policy turns energy into a strategic tool for sovereignty,” stated Maïga, reflecting the AES’s ambition to transform the Sahel into a resilient, prosperous bloc.

The initiative marks another milestone in the AES’s broader mission to foster self-reliance amid regional instability.
