Togo : Mpox, authorities call for vigilance and strict adoption of barrier measures

Togo has reported its first confirmed case of Mpox, also known as monkeypox, according to an official statement released on Friday, May 16, 2025, by the government. The patient, a 22-year-old woman living in the Golfe health district (Greater Lomé), is currently receiving care in a specialized infectious diseases unit.

Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease transmitted to humans through direct contact with bodily fluids, skin lesions, or contaminated objects. Human-to-human transmission is also possible, particularly through sexual contact or close physical interactions. Common symptoms include fever, muscle pain, and skin rashes, though severe forms can occur and may be fatal, especially in immunocompromised individuals.

In response to this concerning situation, the Ministry of Health has announced a series of urgent measures:

  • Strengthening epidemiological surveillance
  • Activating early warning systems
  • Preparing medical response mechanisms
  • Launching a targeted awareness campaign in high-risk areas

Togolese health authorities are urging the public to adopt preventive measures to curb the spread:

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer
  • Wear a mask in public spaces or around symptomatic individuals
  • Avoid close contact with anyone showing suspicious lesions or flu-like symptoms
  • Seek medical attention promptly if experiencing any symptoms or doubts
