Raphael Varane facing uncertain Future at Manchester United: Potential contract freedom this summer

In a recent report by The Athletic on Thursday, it has been revealed that Raphael Varane, currently relegated to the bench by coach Erik ten Hag due to the resurgence of Harry Maguire, could become a free agent in the upcoming summer. This development stems from the fact that the French defender’s contract, originally set to run until 2025, included an unactivated option for the final year.

Upon the transfer, Manchester United had initially announced a five-year contract or until the summer of 2026.

However, The Athletic discloses that the actual contract was for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension.

While the English club still has the option to extend Varane’s contract for an additional year, it appears that, as things stand, the player’s current contract will expire next summer.

Despite making 76 appearances for the club across all competitions and scoring two goals, Varane has struggled to secure a regular place in the Manchester United lineup this season.

The uncertain contractual situation adds an intriguing dimension to his future with the English club.
