Niger: The Nigerien people alone must decide their destiny; Says US Secretary of State Molly Phee

The validation of Niamey’s authority by the United States through the appointment of an ambassador should serve as a wake-up call to ECOWAS, which persists in its approach of attempting to enforce governance on a sovereign nation.

During a press briefing conducted by the US representation in Niamey, Molly Phee, US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, emphasized that the future of Niger should be determined solely by its people, and the United States aims to support them in this endeavor.

Phee’s statements followed the ECOWAS summit in Abuja, which she attended, and subsequent meetings with Nigerien authorities.

According to the Secretary, the United States «recognizes that the aspiration for a democratic and prosperous country is the inherent right of the people of Niger to determine their destiny and choose their leader through a free and transparent electoral process».

Molly Phee further conveyed that the United States «endorses the ECOWAS resolutions, particularly those urging the CNSP to announce a realistic timetable for a credible and swift transition, facilitating Niger’s prompt return to a democratically elected government».

In conclusion, the United States, under President Biden, reaffirmed its «stance in favor of resuming military cooperation and development aid with Niger», signaling a commitment to strengthening ties and supporting the nation’s development.
