Burkina Faso : Fight against corruption, when the ministry calls for citizen responsibility at the heart of road checks
In a tense security context, marked by heightened deployment of law enforcement on roads and in urban centers, the Burkinabe government is not losing sight of another insidious threat: corruption. On June 23, 2025, Security Minister Mahamadou Sana issued a strong call to the population, urging citizens to report any cases of corruption or abusive practices during security checks.
This message, conveyed in an official statement, reflects a clear political will: to make the fight against corruption a priority at all levels of the state apparatus, including within the security services. While commending the commitment and professionalism of the vast majority of security forces, the ministry firmly acknowledges that some agents stray from their primary mission, abusing their authority or engaging in reprehensible behavior.
Though isolated, such misconduct seriously undermines the trust between citizens and law enforcement. It weakens security efforts, fosters suspicion, and erodes the effectiveness of public policies. For this reason, the ministry reminds everyone that these actions constitute offenses punishable under Burkina Faso’s Penal Code.
As a concrete gesture of openness and citizen responsibility, the ministry has provided a toll-free hotline—1020—for reporting any suspicious or abusive behavior. Managed by the National Coordination for Police Forces Control (CONACFP), this participatory watchdog tool represents a significant step forward in strengthening the rule of law and public accountability.
This reinforcement of internal control mechanisms, combined with the direct involvement of citizens, marks a positive turning point. It aligns with the government’s broader strategy to promote good governance and restore trust in public administration.
