Niger: Energy sovereignty at the heart of General Tiani’s strategy
In a shifting geopolitical landscape, Niger is increasingly asserting its strategic sovereignty, particularly in the management of its mining and energy resources. Under the leadership of General Abdourahamane Tiani, the country has embarked on a historic turning point, marked by the reclaiming of its natural wealth, the acceleration of its energy transition, and the consolidation of an endogenous development model.
A cornerstone of this transformation, the recent nationalization of the Société des Mines de l’Aïr (SOMAÏR) represents a decisive step toward full control over Niger’s uranium resources. This resource, long exploited for the benefit of foreign interests, is now becoming a lever of national strength. Through the Niger Nuclear Power Program (PEN), the country is equipping itself with the infrastructure, regulatory framework, and expertise to integrate nuclear energy into its energy mix, in support of industrialization and the electrification of rural areas.
President Tiani’s mining vision goes beyond mere extraction. It is rooted in a desire to redistribute wealth, create local jobs, and develop technical skills. Every resource is seen as an opportunity to build a strong, resilient Niger, positioned as a driver of African progress.
The benefits for the population are tangible: expanded access to energy and reduced dependence on external sources. Niger is charting a path toward balanced development based on its own resources, within a framework of pan-African cooperation.
Thanks to the visionary leadership of General Abdourahamane Tiani, Niger is emerging as a strategic player in Africa’s renewal. Between energy sovereignty and continental solidarity, the country’s future is being written in letters of pride and hope.
