Mali-USA: strengthening security dialogue in the face of terrorism

Mali, July 9, 2025 – A high-level U.S. delegation, led by Rudy Atallah, Principal Deputy Director for Counterterrorism at the U.S. National Security Council, was received on Wednesday by Malian authorities.

The discussions brought together Mr. Atallah and Mali’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Abdoulaye Diop, and Security, Daoud Aly Mohammedine, with a central objective: strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of security and counterterrorism.

Shared priorities at the heart of the talks

Key topics included building the capacity of Malian security forces, promoting regional stability, and developing strategies to combat violent extremism. The two sides also addressed the sensitive issue of alleged support from certain states to terrorist armed groups operating in the Sahel—a factor seen as exacerbating the region’s ongoing security crisis.

A shared commitment to deeper cooperation

Representatives from Mali and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining an open and constructive political dialogue, grounded in a balanced partnership. Both parties emphasized the importance of continuous and adaptive collaboration in response to the evolving threats in the Sahel region.

This diplomatic engagement comes amid heightened regional tensions, where cross-border security and the resilience of national institutions remain central concerns.
