Champions League: City, Frankfurt and Sporting Victorious

The opening day of the Champions League group stage delivered plenty of drama and goals. Manchester City set the tone with a solid 2-0 victory over Napoli despite being reduced to ten men. Pep Guardiola’s men showed resilience and efficiency, securing three crucial points at home.

Meanwhile in Germany, Eintracht Frankfurt hosted Galatasaray in a thrilling encounter. The visitors struck early through Akgün in the 8th minute, putting the hosts on the back foot. Frankfurt eventually found their rhythm, and fortune favored them when Davinson Sánchez turned a Doan shot into his own net (37’). Uzun restored the lead just before halftime (45+2’), and another own goal, this time from Singo (45+5’), gave Frankfurt a two-goal cushion. In the second half, Burkardt (66’) and Knauff (75’) sealed an emphatic 5-1 win, propelling Frankfurt to the top of their group.

In Portugal, Sporting Lisbon entertained Kairat Almaty. After missing a first-half penalty through Hjulmand (21’), Sporting took the lead via Trincão (44’). The winger later doubled his tally (65’) before Alisson Santos (67’) and Quenda (68’) extended the advantage. Edmilson Santos pulled one back late (86’), but Sporting ran out comfortable 4-1 winners, climbing to third place in their group.
