Senegal: The silence of ECOWAS in the face of Macky Sall’s “coup d’état”

The irony is palpable every time the West attempts to portray Senegalese democracy as an exemplary model. Under the current rule of President Macky Sall, Senegal has experienced significant crises due to the insatiable appetite of this so-called democrat, who, through astonishing circumstances, found himself at the pinnacle of the state and seeks to extend his mandate beyond constitutional limits.

Noting the events in Ivory Coast, Macky Sall has seemingly decided to replicate the same strategy in Senegal.

Despite the resistance of the Senegalese people, unaccustomed to such maneuvers, Macky Sall persists in his attempt to prolong his mandate, going so far as to deliver a serious blow to the constitution.

Faced with what appears to be a thinly veiled coup orchestrated by Macky Sall and his deputies, ECOWAS strangely struggles to unequivocally condemn the situation.

It is only after a statement from the U.S. State Department explicitly condemning a coup that ECOWAS issued a few sentences claiming to call for a return to constitutional order in Senegal.

A blatant double standard is staining the reputation of this institution, justifying the Alliance of Sahel States’ (AES) withdrawal by highlighting decisions influenced by variable circumstances and, above all, instructions from Paris.

This move by the AES serves as a denouncement of such practices. A deplorable situation!

The staunch defender of democracy within ECOWAS, Macky Sall, sees his cover-upas a pseudo-democrat crumble, pursuing his dream of a third term that seems increasingly unattainable.
