Senegal: Macky Sall maintains ambiguity on Presidential election date, leaving Political landscape uncertain
In Senegal, President Macky Sall has yet to announce a new date for the presidential election initially slated for February 25th. The Constitutional Council’s nullification of the law, passed by the ruling party’s deputies, postponing the election to December 15, 2024, adds uncertainty to the political landscape. President Sall, in a press conference on Thursday, asserted that the election date would be determined through a dialogue engaging all political stakeholders.
Contrary to his earlier decree on February 3rd and the legislative decision, Macky Sall has now agreed to conduct the presidential election before December 15, acknowledging and committing to respecting the Constitutional Council’s decision. This shift comes amid growing anticipation and political maneuvering.
During the press conference, he pledged to initiate a two-day consultation starting February 25th with the Senegalese political class, aimed at establishing the next election date in case of consensus.
«As for the election date, we will defer to the proposals emerging from the ongoing dialogue», Macky Sall stated, emphasizing flexibility and acknowledging that the election could be scheduled either before or after April 2nd, the deadline when his mandate concludes.
The abrupt announcement to postpone the presidential election, made on the eve of the campaign kickoff, has prompted mixed reactions.
While many were ready to launch their campaigns, opposition figure Thierno Alassane Sall expressed skepticism, viewing the proposed dialogue as a selective process that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
«Negotiating with him to postpone the elections and granting widespread amnesty would be betraying the sacrifice of the young people who died opposing the election delay», he passionately declared.
The unfolding developments underscore a complex political landscape as Senegal navigates the path towards its next presidential election.
