DRC: Chiefs of defence forces from four SADC member countries commit to peace in North Kivu

Following a three-day mission in Goma, North Kivu, the chiefs of defense forces from four SADC member countries and Burundi have reiterated their determination to bring peace to the region troubled by the M23 rebel activity. The decision was announced on Saturday, March 2.

During the meeting, five chiefs of general staff representing South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania, the DRC, and Burundi convened to assess the joint operations within the framework of the SADC mission in the DRC.

After two days of intensive discussions, these high-ranking officials committed to strengthening the SADC mission forces alongside Burundian forces and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) to counter the threat posed by the M23.

Major General Sylvain Ekenge, the military spokesperson for the FARDC, emphasized in a press statement, «This meeting allowed us to assess the situation on the ground and fine-tune strategies for enhanced action. The visit to Mubambiro also provided a firsthand insight into the situation. The presence of military chiefs in Goma reflects the strong commitment of SADC and Burundi alongside the DRC to restore peace in this eastern region. »

The decisions made during this meeting demonstrate a shared determination among SADC member countries and Burundi to end the disruptions caused by the M23 in North Kivu.

The joint operations and strategies devised aim to restore peace and stability not only for the DRC but also for neighbouring countries engaged in this mission.
