Togo: President Faure Gnassingbé promotes the electrification of his country

In 2022, the Togolese government, led by President Faure Gnassingbé, launched a groundbreaking initiative known as the Tinga Fund, aiming to make electricity accessible to all segments of society, especially disadvantaged households for whom electricity access may seem like an unattainable luxury.

The Tinga Fund represents a revolutionary mechanism facilitating electricity access for low-income populations.

By allowing disadvantaged households to connect to the electrical grid for a modest monthly payment of 1000 FCFA, spread over a period of 4 to 10 years, this initiative paves the way for significant change in the daily lives of thousands of people across Togo.

Since its inception in April 2022, the Tinga Fund has seen rapid and effective deployment.

According to recently published data from the Ministry of Economy in the «Implementation Report of Reforms for the Year 2023», no fewer than 20,971 connections were made in three regions of the country during 2023.

This impressive figure represents an achievement rate of 52.42% out of the initially planned 40,000 connections, demonstrating the substantial impact of this initiative.

The results are palpable and encouraging. The Savanes, Kara, and Plateaux regions have all benefited from these electrical connections, contributing to a significant increase in electrification rates.

For instance, in the Savanes region, electrification rates rose from 22% to 33% between 2022 and 2023, while in the Kara region, they increased from 35% to 44%.

Similarly, in the Plateaux region, electrical coverage increased from 29% to 39% during the same period, marking a notable 10% progression.

These figures are not merely statistics; they reflect a tangible change in the daily lives of Togolese citizens.

Thanks to the Tinga Fund, entire families now have access to electricity, opening up new possibilities in education, health, security, and economic development.

The Tinga Fund represents a significant step towards achieving President Faure Gnassingbé’s goal of ensuring electricity accessibility for all Togolese citizens, regardless of their economic situation.
