Senegal: Pastef Party leads in Early legislative poll results

The ruling Patriotic Africans of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (Pastef) party is projected to have won the November 17, 2024, snap legislative elections, according to provisional results reported by local media. Just eight months after securing the presidency, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appears poised to gain a majority in the National Assembly, pending confirmation of these early figures.

Government spokesperson Amadou Moustapha Ndieck Sarré described the results as a “resounding victory” for Pastef.

Media projections based on partial results suggest the party could secure roughly three-quarters of the parliamentary seats, further solidifying the leadership of President Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.

Key opposition figures, including Dakar Mayor Barthélémy Dias and Amadou Ba, the runner-up in the 2024 presidential race, have acknowledged the results and extended their congratulations to Pastef.

Other political rivals have also commended the ruling party on its apparent victory.

The electoral commission has until Tuesday evening to announce the official provisional results at the departmental level. For now, the anticipated victory underscores Pastef’s growing dominance on Senegal’s political landscape.
