Algeria: The country aims for agricultural Self-Sufficiency in 2 years

Mr. Abdellatif Dilmi, Secretary-General of the National Union of Algerian Farmers (UNPA), discussed in Boumerdes the realistic possibility for Algeria to achieve self-sufficiency in various agricultural products within just two years. To achieve this, he emphasizes the importance of creating all the necessary conditions for a flourishing agricultural production.

According to Abdellatif Dilmi, Algeria possesses the resources and capabilities needed to revitalize its agricultural sector.

Among these assets are university-educated professionals, groundwater resources, and vast fertile lands in the South and High Plateaus.

He highlights the current focus on the South, with an area of nearly 450,000 hectares allocated to agricultural investors, seen as a crucial step.

The Secretary-General of the UNPA emphasizes the importance of directing efforts towards the South to attract investors.

He insists on the necessity of providing essential means of production, such as opening roads and routes, as well as ensuring a reliable supply of electrical energy and water.

Dilmi commends the decisions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, such as the provision of free seeds and fertilizers, and the extension of credit repayment periods from 3 to 4 years, aimed at encouraging farmers.

Abdellatif Dilmi also praises the decision to establish conservation warehouses in each province of the country for widely consumed agricultural products.

He describes this measure as «thoughtful and motivating» for farmers, encouraging them to redouble their efforts.

These warehouses are seen as a means of preserving product quality and boosting farmers’ confidence.

Under the leadership of Abdellatif Dilmi, the UNPA positions itself as a key player in realizing Algeria’s ambitions of agricultural self-sufficiency.

Efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector, combined with ongoing government support, create a promising scenario for the future.

The coming years could witness a significant transformation in Algeria’s agricultural landscape, contributing to food security and economic prosperity.
