Tyla secures Grammy win for Best African Music Performance in inaugural year of category

Tyla had no Grammy jitters, securing the award for Best African Music Performance in the inaugural year of the category, as presented by The Recording Academy.

Facing tough competition from ASAKE & Olamide, Burna Boy, Davido featuring Musa Keys, and Ayra Starr, the Johannesburg-born singer celebrated her victory.

Tyla’s chart-topping single, “Water,” reached the seventh spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart last month.

Expressing her disbelief, Tyla, at the age of 22, remarked, «I never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 22 years old. Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category. It’s so important».

The Best African Music Performance category is part of the 2024 Grammys’ new additions, along with Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording. In a different genre, Australian pop sensation Kylie Minogue claimed the latter award for «Padam Padam».

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is currently broadcasting live on the CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+ at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
