Burkina Faso’s agricultural revolution: Captain Traoré’s bold path to food sovereignty

Under the visionary leadership of President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is undergoing an unprecedented agricultural transformation that redefines the nation’s approach to food security. Facing multidimensional challenges of security threats, poverty, and food dependency, the country is reinventing itself by placing agriculture at the core of its national sovereignty.

The ambition is clear: achieve food self-sufficiency by mobilizing the entire nation around this common goal.

A New agricultural paradigm

Supported by the determined efforts of Minister of State Ismaël Sombié, President Traoré is driving a nationwide agricultural revolution through deep structural reforms and concrete actions.

The government’s Agropastoral and Halieutic Offensive symbolizes a decisive break from past dependency models.

A prime example is the cultivation of 714 hectares of irrigated land in Bama, exclusively dedicated to rice production a major step toward food security.

Modernizing burkina’s farming sector

Key to this transformation is the strategic investment in mechanization and agricultural inputs.

The distribution of 400 tractors, 239 tillers, and nearly 69,000 tons of fertilizer has significantly boosted rural productivity, marking a full-scale modernization of the sector.

Governance reforms, including the restructuring of agricultural chambers, reflect President Traoré’s results-driven approach, ensuring better territorial coordination and efficiency.

An inclusive model: Agriculture as a unifying force

One of the most groundbreaking aspects of Traoré’s policy is its inclusivity. From Patriot Volunteers to prison inmates, all segments of society are now integrated into agricultural production.

This revolutionary model combines security, social reintegration, and productivity into a single strategic vision.

 For the 2025 farming season, 200 hectares have been allocated for cultivation by inmates, showcasing the policy’s dual social and economic impact.

Building lasting food sovereignty

These reforms are not temporary fixes but the foundation of a sustainable, people-centered food sovereignty. President Traoré embodies a leadership style defined by proximity, courage, and transformative action. His governance has sparked an agricultural revolution where every citizen becomes an active participant in national rebuilding.
