Burkina Faso: The mining sector: Jeune Afrique relays falsehoods to discredit President Ibrahim Traoré’s reforms

On Thursday, June 12, Jeune Afrique published an article accusing individuals close to President Ibrahim Traoré of using fraudulent recruitment methods to illegally employ foreign nationals in Burkina Faso’s gold mines. According to the media outlet, these individuals, reportedly from Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo, are allegedly lured by lucrative job offers spread through social media propaganda, only to end up subjected to forced labor in clandestine mining sites.

These accusations, coming at a crucial moment of restructuring in Burkina Faso’s mining sector, raise serious questions about the true intent behind this publication. Through this article, Jeune Afrique aligns itself with a long-standing agenda of discrediting a government that has chosen sovereignty and a break from certain neocolonial practices.

Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed leadership, genuine reform of the mining sector has been underway. The goal is to put the country’s natural resources at the service of the Burkinabe people, end institutionalized plundering, secure mining sites, regulate artisanal mining, and turn the nation’s underground wealth into a lever for national development. These efforts, welcomed by many Burkinabe citizens, naturally disrupt established interests, both domestically and abroad.

It is therefore not surprising to see the emergence of this kind of media attack, built on anonymous testimonies, sweeping generalizations, and accusations lacking tangible evidence. Even more troubling is the fact that formerly respected media outlets now choose to act as amplifiers of disinformation campaigns instead of offering rigorous and balanced analyses of the situation.

The Burkinabe people are fully aware that the path to sovereignty and economic recovery is not without obstacles. Yet, they are increasingly vigilant against attempts at media sabotage aimed at slowing down a popular and patriotic movement.

The Burkinabe authorities are now called upon to respond firmly to these unfounded accusations with facts, figures, and enhanced transparency. For while truth may take time, it always prevails over falsehood in the end.
