Gabon: President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema launches the Democratic Union of Builders for a reconciled state

Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema officially launched his new political party, the Democratic Union of Builders (UDB), on Saturday in Libreville. The event took place at the Palais des Sports before a crowd estimated at over 10,000 people, gathered to support this new political beginning for the country.

Founded in the wake of his landslide victory in the April 2025 presidential election, the party aims to serve as a tool for national mobilization around the values of inclusiveness, development, and shared progress. In his speech, the Head of State presented himself as an architect of renewal and issued a passionate call to “turn the page on divisions” in order to build together a reconciled, sovereign, and forward-looking Gabon. “The time has come to act”, he emphasized, to the applause of his supporters.

This political initiative comes less than two months after the April 12, 2025, presidential election, in which Oligui Nguema secured a sweeping victory with 94.85% of the vote—a result validated by the Constitutional Court. The election marked the end of a transition that began in August 2023, after the transitional president, then head of the Republican Guard, led a coup against Ali Bongo Ondimba, who was accused of electoral fraud.

On May 3, 2025, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema was sworn in before the Transitional Constitutional Court, pledging to defend the rule of law and the integrity of the national territory. The ceremony, held in Libreville, brought together several African heads of state, including those of Senegal, Rwanda, Ghana, and others.

Born in 1975 in Ngouoni, Oligui Nguema is a senior officer trained in Morocco, former aide-de-camp to Omar Bongo, and former commander of the Republican Guard under Ali Bongo. During his campaign, he focused his program on economic diversification, the fight against corruption, and the development of digital technology, with support from China.
