Togo: The country begins its industrial revolution with made-in-Togo electric vehicles

In a global context of energy transition and technological revolution, Togo—under the visionary leadership of President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé—continues to lay the foundations for sustainable and inclusive development.

The latest initiative comes from the University of Lomé, which is making steady progress toward producing “Made-in-Togo” electric vehicles.

Since April 6, a delegation from the University of Lomé has been on a mission in China’s Hebei province, where it is discussing the implementation of an agreement signed in December 2024 with a Chinese technology group. The agreement aims to establish the technical, educational, and industrial conditions necessary to set up a training-based factory dedicated to designing and assembling electric vehicles in Lomé.

Through this initiative, the University of Lomé is proving its ability to go beyond its academic mission and become a key driver of Togo’s industrial and technological transformation.

This electric vehicle project aligns with the President’s vision of an industrialized Togo—one that trains its own engineers, technicians, and operators locally, while prioritizing environmental protection and carbon emission reduction.

To achieve this, the government—under President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé—has, for several years, been investing in technical education, industrial transformation, and digital infrastructure, with tangible results.

Driven by President Gnassingbé’s leadership, Togo is showing its readiness to meet the challenges of modernity by leveraging its human capital, forging key technological partnerships, and anticipating major global shifts.
