Girona stuns Barcelona in Catalan derby, claims Liga summit; Atlético Madrid bounces back

Girona secured a prestigious 4-2 victory against Barcelona in the Catalan derby during the 16th round of La Liga, reclaiming the league’s top spot. The win marked Girona’s 13th victory in 16 matches, placing them two points ahead of Real Madrid and seven ahead of both Atlético Madrid and Barcelona.

Girona took the lead with a goal from Dovbyk (13th minute), and although Lewandowski equalized for Barcelona (19th minute), Miguel Gutierrez’s strike (40th minute) and Valery’s composed finish (80th minute) gave Girona a significant advantage.

Despite Gündogan pulling one back for Barcelona (92nd minute), Stuani’s counter-attack goal (95th minute) sealed the remarkable victory for Girona.

In another match, Atlético Madrid bounced back from last week’s defeat against Barcelona by defeating Almeria 2-1.

Morata and Correa scored for Atlético, securing their 17th consecutive home victory in La Liga and regaining the third position in the league standings.

Griezmann played a crucial role in both goals, contributing to Atlético’s success. The victory sets the stage for Atlético’s upcoming Champions League clash against Lazio, where the battle for the top spot in Group E awaits.
